The English Language Learning in School Settings Graduate Program at the University of Michigan School of Education

How do we learn second languages?

What school and community practices support the academic participation of English language learners?

How can classroom teachers foster English learners' academic language development at all levels and in all subjects?

As a participant in the program, you will:

  • Learn about the process of second language development and help language learners develop academic language proficiency
  • Learn about the language demands of different subjects (language arts, social studies, history, mathematics, and science)
  • Focus on language in the content area of your specialization
  • Learn to design effective programs that integrate language and subject area instruction

Along with earning an MA in Education, you may also choose to earn the Michigan ESL endorsement through coursework in this program.

Courses are offered in the evenings and summer to accommodate teachers, and part time enrollment is an option.
